Clean isn’t always clean.

Ironically, a lot of household cleaners have dirty chemistry. Most people would be shocked if they knew how unsafe conventional cleaning products are in terms of the long-term threats they pose to our health and our environment.  1 out every 3 chemical cleaning products contains ingredients known to cause human health or environmental problems.  According to a study by the EPA, toxic chemicals in household cleaners are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air. We are continually working to improve our formulas and are straight up about what ingredients make the cut.

Explore below to learn more about our “say goodbye to” section which details the dirty chemistry that we purposefully choose not to put into our products, our approach to healthy cleaning, and exactly what our claims mean.

Super Concentrated

We concentrate our formulas so that instead of wasting time, energy, and money, packaging, and shipping mostly water, we provide our customers with more active ingredients than our competitors. We use several metrics for determining our relative concentrations, these include comparing the percentage of active ingredients, dosage recomm-endations, and measuring the total solids by refractive index.

Making Canada Proud

We are making Canada proud by providing super concentrated, highly effective household cleaners that are free from ingredients such as phthalates, dyes, 1,4-dioxane and SLS/SLES. These ingredients are commonly found in many different household cleaning products. However, these ingredients are also known irritants and suspected carcinogens. In some cases, they have been linked to cancer and further increasing ADHD symptoms! You can trust that these chemicals are kept far away from any Ecologik products.

Biodegradeable (OECD 301D)

We perform internal testing on all of our finished products in accordance with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 301 D (closed bottle) method. The pass levels for biodegradability are removal of 70% dissolved organic carbon and 60% theoretical oxygen demand. These values must be reached within 28 days.

Full Disclosure

All of our products are made from naturally sourced-ingredients, derived from nature with minimal synthetics. We tabulate the % natural and naturally derived for each product based on the ingredients in our formulas. Natural ingredients will inevitably degrade or rot over time and therefore have synthetic components added to extend their shelf life. Be assured that we only use synthetic ingredients when there is no natural alternative and we always take care to select the safest ingredients available. We continually review our formulas, scientific literature, and new ingredients to ensure that we are providing our customers with the safest and most natural chemistry the market can supply.

Common sensitizers found in cleaning products are dyes, fragrances, and solvents. Ingredients considered sensitizers (substances that will lead to an allergic response following skin contact) are either not present or present at less than 0.1% of the mixture (adapted from the WHMIS 2015/GHS determination of sensitizers). This means our product is relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. We cannot say with certainty that our products will not cause any allergic reaction or irritation in any person. A small percentage of individuals may have still have an allergic reaction or experience irritation after exposure to certain ingredients or products. Especially sensitive people should consult with their doctor to choose products that are best for them.

A study comparing women who work outside the home with women who work at home, found a 54% higher risk of developing cancer in women who work at home. The study concluded that this is a direct result of the chemicals in household products.

Ammonia is often used in cleaning products because it evaporates quickly leaving a streak-free shine. Vapours emitted by ammonia as it evaporates can irritate the skin, eyes, throat, and lungs; this is especially true for asthmatics. When ammonia is mixed with chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite), a highly poisonous gas forms. Ecologik products do not contain ammonia.
The Government of Canada limits the use of phosphates in household cleaners and detergents as a means of protecting our environment from harmful algal blooms that result from their release into waterways. Ecologik products do not contain phosphates.
Fillers are generally inert ingredients commonly used in detergents to add bulk. However, fillers may be harmful, as they tend to include chemicals such as SLS and 1, 4-dioxane. Our products do not contain fillers.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is used in cleaning products as a water softener, by binding with the metals found in water. Unfortunately it has the ability to persist in the environment and enhance the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals which can pose a risk to groundwater. It is considered one of the major organic pollutants discharged in waters. None of our products contain EDTA.
Unintentional ingestion of toxic household chemicals is associated with an annual average of 39 deaths to children under age 5, and an estimated 87,700 children treated in hospital emergency rooms. These poisoning incidents resulted in an estimated societal cost of almost $2.3 billion.

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) are common in household and personal cleaning products because they provide that lather we love. However, they are known irritants and suspected carcinogens. We do not use these as ingredients and our suppliers can confirm that these are not present in our ingredients even in trace amounts.
Optical brighteners are synthetic chemicals added to laundry detergents to make clothing appear whiter and brighter, and therefore cleaner. Some optical brighteners have been linked to developmental and reproductive effects and others are potentially toxic to humans. In addition to this, optical brighteners are not readily biodegradable and may bioaccumulate. We provide a bright, white clean without the use of optical brighteners.
This is a common ingredient in toilet bowl cleaners, drain openers, and laundry liquid. Sulphuric acid causes severe skin burns and eye damage and is a known human carcinogen and asthmagen. We have opted out of using this chemical.
VOCs are compounds that easily become vapours or gases. When they combine with nitrogen oxides in the air they form smog. Short-term exposure can lead to headaches, dizziness, visual disorders and memory problems. Long-term exposure has been shown to increase cancer risk and result in damage to the central nervous system. None of our products contain VOCs.
Team studies indicated that while people are using products containing organic chemicals, they can expose themselves and others to very high pollutant levels, and elevated concentrations can persist in the air long after the activity is completed.

Repeated exposure to chlorine bleach has been linked to respiratory damage and wheezing as well as nose and eye irritation. Bleach fumes consist of a complex mixture of toxic, carcinogenic and irritating gases. And when mixed with ammonia, it makes a highly poisonous gas. You will not find chlorine bleach in our products.
We believe in cruelty-free production, we do not use any animal ingredients or animal-derived ingredients in any of our products.

It is well known that cleaning product fumes can trigger asthma attacks in persons previously diagnosed with asthma. In addition to that, there is evidence that frequent use of many ordinary cleaning supplies at home or on the job is linked with the development of asthma and other respiratory problems in otherwise healthy individuals. Ingredients considered respiratory sensitizers (substances that will lead to hypersensitivity of the airways following inhalation of the substance) are either not present or present at less than 0.1% of the mixture. This means our product is relatively unlikely to cause a respiratory reaction. A small percentage of individuals may have still have a reaction or experience irritation after exposure to certain ingredients or products. Especially sensitive people should consult with their doctor to choose products that are best for them.
